Throughout my high school career, I began to develop strong views against the topic of female inequality, which then led me to create art pieces that had the concept of feminism intertwined in them. These pieces of art address my opinions about the historical and social issues that women often have to face. My 2D series illustrates the negative influences and outcomes that the beauty industry had on young women. I understand that the beauty industry affects men, as well, but it doesn’t have as much of an impact as it does on women. I focused on how the beauty industry makes young women slaves to their ideas of perfection and beauty causing these young women to go through physical and mental extremes such as, eating disorders, intentional physical distortions and sometimes even death. Through this series, I also wanted to challenge the typical stereotypes that have been brought up through time from the beauty industry and society. These stereotypes included topics about women being materialistic and social-media-attention-seekers.
